For a century, amplifiers worked the same way: take a small audio signal and make it bigger using analog transistors operating in their linear region. It works, but it is wasteful — a traditional Class-AB amplifier throws away more than half its energy as heat. For a home stereo that is annoying. For a battery-powered speaker, a phone or a car, it is disqualifying.
The answer is the Class-D amplifier: instead of amplifying the signal smoothly, it switches the output fully on and off at high speed — pulse-width modulation — and filters the result back into sound. Almost no energy is wasted as heat, so the amplifier can be tiny, cool and efficient. Today Class-D is in virtually every phone, laptop, TV, soundbar, smart speaker and electric car. And the people who turned it from a textbook idea into shipping silicon were, to a remarkable degree, Danish.

It started at DTU and Bang & Olufsen
The modern Danish audio-amplifier story begins with a PhD project. In the 1990s Karsten Nielsen, a doctoral student at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), worked with Bang & Olufsen on a dissertation with a deceptively dry title: "Audio Power Amplifier Techniques Based on Efficient Power Conversion." His methods first shipped inside B&O's BeoLab 1 active loudspeaker in 1997, and he was awarded his PhD in 1998.
In 1999 Nielsen and Bang & Olufsen spun the research out into a dedicated company — first called Bang & Olufsen PowerHouse, renamed ICEpower in 2001. ICEpower built highly integrated Class-D amplifier modules at power levels reaching into the kilowatts, and licensed them far beyond B&O's own products — into professional audio, automotive and consumer electronics. B&O bought out Nielsen's share in 2008; ICEpower remains a Danish Class-D specialist to this day.
The world's first all-digital amplifier: Toccata → Texas Instruments
While ICEpower was being formed, another Danish team was chasing an even more radical idea: skip the analog stages entirely and drive the amplifier directly from digital data. In 1997, engineer Lars Risbo founded Toccata Technology in Copenhagen to do exactly that. Its "Equibit" technology is widely credited as the world's first true all-digital audio power amplifier — converting a digital audio stream (S/PDIF or USB) straight into the switching pattern that drives a Class-D output stage, with no analog signal path in between.
In March 2000, Texas Instruments acquired Toccata — a three-year-old, 15-person Danish startup — and kept the operation in Denmark. That team became the seed of TI's digital-audio business: the TAS5000-series chipsets that put Equibit-derived technology into PCs, home theatre, car audio and AV receivers worldwide. Lars Risbo went on to spend years as a TI Fellow continuing audio research in Denmark. The acquisition is the reason a global American chipmaker has carried out audio-amplifier design near Copenhagen for over two decades.
A cluster forms — and the acquirers line up
What makes this a stronghold rather than a one-off is that it kept happening. The same DTU-and-B&O design culture, the same small-team mixed-signal expertise, produced startup after startup — and each time, one of the world's largest semiconductor companies bought it to get the talent.

Merus Audio, founded in 2010 by Hans Hasselby-Andersen and Mikkel Høyerby, is the clearest modern echo of Toccata: a small Copenhagen team with a genuinely novel architecture — multi-level conversion that cuts distortion and power at low volume — acquired in 2018 by Infineon, which folded it into its global Class-D audio portfolio for power levels below ~70 W. AudioAsics, acquired by Analog Devices in 2006, did the same on the input side of the signal chain: the low-power microphone and converter front-ends that pair with those amplifiers.
Why Denmark
The same forces that built the hearing-aid cluster built the audio-amplifier one — and the two share a gene pool. Both are about low-power, high-fidelity mixed-signal design: squeezing the best possible sound out of the fewest possible milliwatts. Denmark had a century-old consumer-audio champion in Bang & Olufsen, a world-class mixed-signal research group at DTU, and a culture that treated a physical constraint — heat, battery, size — as the interesting part of the problem rather than a reason to give up.
Crucially, the talent did not leave when the companies were sold. TI, Analog Devices and Infineon did not acquire these startups to shut them down — they acquired them to keep the Danish design teams working. Each acquisition planted a global semiconductor company's flag in Denmark, and the engineers trained inside them went on to found or staff the next generation, from Sonic Edge's MEMS speaker ASICs to today's audio startups.
Why this matters
The audio-amplifier story is the proof that the hearing-aid cluster is not a one-off accident. The same Danish mixed-signal DNA — born at DTU, raised at Bang & Olufsen — created an entire category of chip, repeatedly, and made it valuable enough that the largest semiconductor companies in the world paid to bring it in-house and keep it here. Class-D is now invisible and everywhere, and a surprising amount of it traces back to a few hundred engineers between Lyngby, Roskilde and Copenhagen.
